As this day commemorates the three significant events in the life of Gautama Buddha it holds immense religious significance for followers of Buddhism sects. Buddha Purnima is observed on the Purnima (full moon day) in the month of Vaisakh in the traditional Hindu calendar and during the months of April-May in the Gregorian calendar.

Buddha Purnima is an auspicious day even for Hindus and is observed with full devotion and dedication in whole country. In India, this day is declared to be a gazetted holiday. This day is also popularly known as Buddha Jayanti. In the northern regions of the country, Lord Buddha is believed to be the 9th avatar of Lord Vishnu (after Sri Krishna who is the 8th incarnation). However the theories slightly differ in other regions. Irrespective of the belief the day of Buddha Purnima is celebrated with same love and affection towards Gautama Buddha, all across India. Not only this, the festivities of Buddha Purnima can also be witnessed in the neighbouring countries of Nepal and Sri Lanka.
Significance of Buddha Purnima:
The day of Buddha Purnima is very important for followers of Buddhism, in India as well as abroad. Gautama Buddha was a very renowned spiritual leader who denounced all the worldly pleasures to a lead a simple and contended life. He preached the principles of equality and love for all living creatures. Lord Buddha is considered to be the founder of Buddhism. It is believed that the day of Buddha Purnima is thrice blessed as it celebrates the three prestigious events in the life of Gautama Buddha. On this chosen day people remember the teachings of this great saint. His teachings are used a means to end the sufferings and miseries in life.
Rituals during Buddha Purnima:
  • On the day of Buddha Purnima, the followers of Buddhists sects visit Gautama Buddha temples. They spend their time listening to the sermons given by monks there. Some devout Buddhists spend their day visiting various temples and reciting ancient verses.

Kurma Jayanti

The festival of Kurma Jayanti celebrates the birth of Lord Vishnu in the form of a tortoise, known as kurma in Sanskrit language. It falls on the Purnima (full moon day) in the month of Vaishakh in the Hindu calendar. In the English calendar, this date falls between May-June. According to the Hindu legends it is believed that on this very day, Lord Vishnu in His avatar of kurma lifted the gigantic Mandaranchal Parvat on His back during the Ksheera Sagara Manthan. From then onwards Kurma Jayanti is celebrated as the birth anniversary of Lord Kurma (Tortoise). This form is known to be second avatar of Sri Hari Vishnu and Hindu devotees worship Him religiously on this day with full gaiety and dedication. On the day of Kurma Jayanti special pujas and ceremonies are held in Lord Vishnu temples all across the country. The festivity at the Sri Kurman Sri Kurmanatha Swami Temple in Andhra Pradesh is very grand and the festivities lure devotees from far and wide.

Significance :

Kurma Jayanti is an auspicious festival for Hindus. On this day the Kurma Avatar of Lord Vishnu is revered by Hindus. As per the Hindu mythological stories, during the celestial event of Khseera Samudra Manthan the Mandaranchal Parvat was used for churning the ocean. However when the mountain began to sink, Lord Vishnu emerged as a giant tortoise and held the parvat on His back. Therefore without this Kurma Avatar, the Ksheersagara could not be churned and the 14 divine gifts or ratnas would not have been bestowed to the Gods or Devas. Henceforth Kurma Jayanti holds immense religious significance for Hindus and devotees express their gratitude for the greatness of Lord Vishnu. The day of Kurma Jayanti is considered auspicious for initiating construction work owing to the popular belief that Yogmaya resides with Lord Kurma. This day is even favourable for shifting into a new house or work related to Vaastu.

Rituals :

On the day of Kurma Jayanti, devotees keep a strict fast. The vrat begins from the previous night and continues till the full day. The observer of the Kurma Jayanti vrat does not sleep all night and stays awake reciting Vishnu sahasranaam and other Vedic mantras. Lord Vishnu is worshipped with devotion and affection on this day. Devotees pray to their lord to seek divine blessings for removing obstacles in life and also ensuring prosperity and success. On Kurma Jayanti devotees visit Lord Vishnu temples in the evening and witness the rituals held there. Offering donations or charity to Brahmins is also an important event of the day. Donations can be in the form of food, money, clothes or any other essentials of life and should depend on ones financial capacity.

 Story :

Dhanapala was a well-known and religious merchant residing in the city of Bhadravati on the banks of River Saraswati. He was a loyal follower of Lord Vishnu and hence, was popular for his charity and spiritual activities. However, his son, Dhrstabuddhi was exactly the reverse of his father. Thus, he was thrown out of the house due to bad influences and associations. After expending the last amount of wealth remaining with him, Dhrstabuddhi indulged in robbery in order to quench himself. Unfortunately, he was caught by the guards but was asked to instantly leave the kingdom bearing the reputation of his father.

With no hopes, he left for the forests. Here, he took up to killing animals to satiate his starvation. He continues to live with this lifestyle for years but was often reminded about his childhood and past ill deeds. One day, he arrives at the ashram of Sage Kaundinya where the holy atmosphere touched his heart. On his way from the bath, a few drops of water fell from the Sage on Dhrstabuddhi and hence, he instantly broke down into tears. He recited the whole story and enquired about annulling his sins and guilt. The sage advised him to observe the Mohini Ekadashi vrat that occurs in the month of Vaishakha.

As directed, Dhrstabuddhi observed the fast and thus, was able to wash away all his sins. Thereafter, he turned into a true and loyal Vishnu devotee. Eventually, he started serving poor and ill people and finally, he was successful in attaining Moksha, or salvation.
