Pushkaram is an Indian festival dedicated to worshiping of rivers. It is celebrated at shrines along the banks of 12 major sacred rivers in India, in the form of ancestor worship, spiritual discourses, devotional music and cultural programmes. The celebration happens annually, once in 12 years along each river. Each river is associated with a zodiac sign, and the river for each year's festival is based on which sign Jupiter is in at the time. Due to regional variations, some of the zodiac signs are associated with multiple rivers.

Krishna Pushkaralu 2016

Krishna Pushkaralu is a festival of River Krishna which normally occurs once in 12 years. It takes place during the transit of Bruhaspati (Jupiter) into Kanya Rasi (Virgo Zodiac Sign). 

Vijayawada is located on the banks of the Krishna River. Vijayawada is very much famous for Krishna Pushkaralu. During the celebrations, devotees will take a dip in the sacred Krishna River to wash away their sins.

As per the legend, there lived a Brahmin in a village. He did severe penance towards Lord Shiva. As a result of it, Lord Shiva granted a boon because of which he was blessed with a power to purify the holy rivers. Thenceforth he was known as Pushkar (the one who nourishes). While traveling from one zodiac sign to another, Brihaspati aka Jupiter requested Pushkar to make the 12 sacred rivers holy. Various pujas and rituals were performed during the Pushkaralu.

The festival lasts as long as Jupiter remains in the corresponding zodiac sign. Major crowds will throng during the first 12 days. The first 12 days when the Jupiter enters the zodiac sign and the last 12 days when it exits the zodiac sign are considered as most auspicious. 

ABOUT KRISHNA RIVER:

The Krishna river is the fourth largest river, which is about 1,300 kilometers long. It originates from Mahabaleswar of Maharashtra and exits into the Bay of Bengal at Hamsaladeevi. The river flows through Karnataka and ends its journey in Andhra Pradesh before reaching its final destination viz., Bay of Bengal. En route, the river crosses Panchgani, Wai, Narsobachi Wadi and enters Karnataka at Kurundwad, and flows through Belgaum, Bijapur, and Gulbarga districts. Finally, it enters Andhra Pradesh near Deosugur and continues to flow through Mehbubnagar, Kurnool, Guntur and Krishna districts.

It has many tributaries and Tungabhadra is the principal one and the other ones include Mallaprabha, Koyna, Bhima, Ghataprabha, Yerla, Warna, Dindi, Musi, Dudhganga.

Godavari Maha Pushkaralu 2015 Dates

Pushkaram is an Indian festival dedicated to worshiping of rivers.It is part of hindu regional tradition.There are many rivers in india, but only twelve rivers have unique status of their own. Among the twelve rivers Godavari is one of them.Last Godavari Pushkaralu was held in the year 2003.

This festival occurs once every 144 years, corresponding to the 12th recurrence of the 12-year Godavari Pushkaram cycle. The festival is "theoretically" observed throughout the twelve months that the planet remains in that sign, but the first 12 days are considered most sacred.The first 12 days of the Godavari Pushkaram are known as "Aadhi Pushkaram" and the last 12 days are titled "Anthya Pushkaralu". The next Maha Pushkaram will be celebrated in 2159.

Godavari is one of the 12 sacred rivers, and the Godavari Pushkaram takes place once every 12 years, when the Jupiter is in the Leo sign. The Maha Pushkaram ("Great Pushkaram") takes place once every 144 years.

Godavari Pushkaram will occur when the transit of  Bruhaspathi (Jupiter) into the Simha Raasi (Leo Zodiac Sign) along with Pushkar God who is the king of all theerthas.The auspicious occasion comes in every 12 years.

Godavari Significance :

It is the second largest river in india after Ganga.It starts in Maharashtra and flows for 1,465 kilometres  into the Bay of Bengal via the states of Telangana and Andhra Pradesh.

Religious Significance :

Sage Gautama lived in the Brahmagiri Hills at Trayambakeshwar with his wife Ahalya.The Rishi kept his stock of rice in a granary. Once, a cow entered his granary and ate up the rice. When the Rishi tried to ward the cow away with darbha grass, it fell dead. The Rishi wished to atone for the sin of �Gohatya� - killing a sacred cow. He prayed to Lord Shiva and requested him to divert the river Ganges to purify his hermitage. Lord Shiva was pleased with the Rishi so appeared in his Triambaka manifestation and diverted the river Ganges to flow past his homestead.

The Maha Pushkaram festival attracts an estimated 40 to 50 million people from all parts of India. On this occasion, it is essential to take a holy dip in the Godavari River to get the supposed benefits of better physical and mental abilities.

Shoba Yatra is an event proposed during the festival a procession carrying the sacred waters of the Godavari River to be mixed with water bodies in all the villages in the 13 districts(Andhra Pradesh) which lie within the ambit of the Godavari River.

Godavari Harathi :

A religious symbolic performance called the "Godavari Harathi", a ritual of worship with a number of lamps, similar to the Ganga Aarti that is conducted on the banks of the Ganges in Varanasi, is also proposed to be held at Rajahmundry where the river flows out to the sea.
